General Job Description

This is a skilled, technical work performed in the office providing supervision, leadership, and expertise in support, analysis and maintenance of the fiber to the premise network. The individual appointed to this position will be required to perform the following duties:  Monitor and maintain the UTOPIA Fiber production infrastructure. Respond to network outages. Assist with customers and their needs. Assist with installations of business and residential customers. Assist other technicians, analysts, engineers, and managers with reporting needs. Notify technical staff, management, and customers of issues that occur in the production infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems or related field
  • NOC Tech 1: one year of job related experience which must have included supporting a network system from a monitoring and configuration perspective; OR and equivalent combination of job-related education/experience (substituting one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience).
  • NOC Tech 2: Either two years experience as a NOC Technician I; OR three years of comparable job-related experience which must have included supporting a network system from a monitoring and configuration perspective; OR an equivalent combination of job-related education/experience (substituting one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience).
  • Senior NOC Tech: Either two years experience as a NOC Technician II; OR five years of comparable job-related experience which must have included supporting a network system from a monitoring and configuration perspective; OR an equivalent combination of job-related education/experience (substituting one year of post-secondary education/training for six months of experience).

Selection Factors

  • Monitor, maintain, and resolve network and performance issues; ensure continuity of voice, video and data services
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize opportunities and projects for the Network Operations Group
  • Experience with software tools such as ticketing systems, chat and text systems, email systems, Microsoft Word and Excel or Google docs
  • Understanding of the Layer 1-3 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model
  • Understanding of Layer 2 protocols such as RSTP, SPB, VLANs, ARP, MAC, etc.
  • Understanding of routing protocols such as OSPF, ISIS, or BGP
  • Understanding of MPLS, VPLS, EVPN, or other transport protocols
  • Experience with use of Telnet, SSH, traceroute, ping and other network support/troubleshooting protocols
  • Understanding of SNMP (simple network management protocol) and how it works with an NMS
  • Experience with NMS (network monitoring systems) such as Solar Winds, Zabbix, OpenNMS, Zennos, Cacti, or Nagios
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Ability to multitask in a high stressed environment
  • Coordinate, organize, and implement all NOC needs
  • Learn and keep current with technological advances
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public, coworkers, and supervisors
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Certifications including Network +, CCNA, Zabbix Certified Professional, NRS1, or related certifications

  • This work requires sitting at a computer for extended periods of time with some level of work taking place on the phone.
  • Work shift includes day, swing, or graveyards including weekends and holidays; some overtime required.
