Did you know that the United States ranks 26th in the world in broadband speeds? (Click HERE to see the stats.) That's right. We, the leaders of the world in the ways of ideas and innovation are falling behind the likes of Romania and Latvia and Ukraine when it comes to our broadband speeds. How is that even possible?! Not only that, but nearly 100 million American don't have Internet access in their homes.
Well, Google (and UTOPIA for that matter) is out to do something about it. Last month, Time Magazine published the article, Will Google's Insanely-Fast Kansas City Network Shame U.S. ISPs? My thoughts on this question? I surely hope so.
The article reviews how Google's work in Kansas City isn't just some cute publicity stunt to garner more attention, it's a statement to the broadband competition in the US - or lack thereof. Most communities have two choices in regards to their broadband connection (not UTOPIA cities - check out your choices here!). Because these incumbent providers hold the monopoly on broadband connections, they've had very little motivation to improve their services and increase their speeds. Why fix what isn't broken, right? Well, in the mean time, our great country is getting left in the dust on in the world-wide speed test.
Google's hope - and the hope of all of us fiber-optic providers - is that the work we are doing in our communities will give the incumbant monopolies around the nation a big swift kick in the pants to catch up! We are falling behind on the worldwide scale because we've become complacent. We need to wake up and get fiber not only in our communities, but throughout our nation and be world leaders in one of the most important technologies of our future.
This extremely fast broadband will not only give us a faster Internet connection - and a better edge globally - but will set us up for applications that haven't even been dreamt of yet! Interested in getting some fiber to your home? Click HERE!
